Everytime you hear or learn something from First Nations folks about tradition it’s all the time anchored to: spirituality, tales, Dreaming, ritual, symbolism, fantasy, identification, belonging and embodied residing on the planet. There isn’t a concept that tradition is a ‘fog’ or ‘cloudy’, tradition is understood intuitively, experientially and Poetically.
When Security discusses tradition it speaks none of this. It’s as if defining tradition is a form of rationalist quantitative train. We see this within the AIHS Bok on tradition, Cooper, Hopkins, Schein, Busch, Dekker and so on who communicate none of this. Tradition can’t be understood from an engineering and behaviourist paradigm (https://safetyrisk.web/on-culture-and-safety/). And but, that is how First Nations folks dwell tradition is it’s life blood.
And it’s not as if security doesn’t have a spirituality, rituals, symbols, myths and so on. it’s simply that they’re by no means spoken. Such is the character of Security Silences about tradition (https://safetyrisk.web/class/safety-culture-silences/ ).
Even when Hopkins and Busch name on Security to not discuss a tradition of security, they achieve this from a framework of speaking about tradition. How unusual.
After all, we see the spirituality in security with every thing hooked up to zero culminating within the video launched in 2022 Spirit of Zero (https://safetyrisk.web/the-spirit-of-zero/). We see in depth mythology, symbolism and ritual in so many Security techniques attributed as efficient, which they aren’t. There’s not often any correlation between paperwork and work as it’s finished. We see mythology within the attribution of damage charges as a definition of security, limitless meaningless rituals attributed as efficient and naturally, the love of Security for heroes and gurus (https://safetyrisk.web/no-gurus-no-stars-no-heroes-needed-in-safety/ ). All of those and extra are attribute of the tradition of security.
Even when behaviourists and engineers talk about security they use mythological, symbolic and salvation metaphors. For instance, Hopkins (Security Cultures, Security Fashions) repeatedly speaks of how Security is ‘misplaced’, his personal dogmatics and his religion in construction. He speaks of Motive’s ‘state of grace’ and ‘a conceptual fog by which many souls have misplaced their method’. That is typical of the spirituality of security.
A lot of what I learn when engineers and behaviourists communicate of tradition is little greater than religion in its personal techniques, religion that’s unquestioned and attributed as capable of ‘save’. Talking of ‘culturebabble’ (Busch), managing and measuring tradition, the Bradley Curve, cults, symbolism and censoring ‘tradition communicate’, all rings of faith, dogma and acts of religion.
Perhaps Security may be taught a little bit of its personal tradition by overcoming its personal worry of faith, even supposing it’s so non secular.
